Sampling without waste

Use low-price trial sizes, sheet masks and clean testers to drive trial, and a simple log to learn which samples turn into sales.

Free samples are easy to hand out and hard to measure. Many end up in a drawer. A tighter sampling plan costs less, keeps testers clean, and tells you which products earn their spot. Here is a working system for a small shop or studio.

1. Swap some free samples for paid trial

A low price turns a sample into a small commitment. The client has chosen it, so she is more likely to use it.

  • The Vita 10 Radiance Sheet Mask single sheet is $3.00 MSRP. It is a single 15 to 20 minute session, so the client knows by the next morning whether she likes it.
  • The EGF Blue Youth Activating Drop comes in a 10 mL size at $12.99 MSRP, next to the 50 mL at $39.99 MSRP. The 10 mL is your trial size.

2. Give free samples only after a question

Tie each free sample to a short conversation. Ask one question about the client's skin or routine, then choose the sample that matches. A sample handed out at random teaches you nothing. A sample matched to an answer gives you something to follow up on.

3. Keep a sampling log

A notebook or a simple spreadsheet is enough. Record:

  • Date
  • Product sampled
  • Paid trial or free sample
  • Client first name and a contact, only with her permission
  • Follow-up date, about a week later
  • Result: bought full size, bought something else, or no purchase yet

At the end of each month, count how many samples of each product led to a full-size purchase. Keep sampling what converts. Cut or change what does not.

4. Follow up once

One message or one question at the next visit is enough. Ask how the product felt and whether she used all of it. The answer tells you as much as the sale does.

At the counter: "Try the sheet mask tonight or the small Drop for a couple of weeks. Next time you're in, tell me what you thought and we'll pick your full size."

5. Tester hygiene checklist

  • Mark every tester clearly as a tester, and write the date you opened it on the base.
  • Never let a dropper touch skin. Dispense onto a clean disposable spatula or the back of the client's hand.
  • Use disposable spatulas for any jar. Never let fingers go into the jar.
  • Keep caps and lids closed between uses.
  • Wipe tester bottles and the display surface at the start of each day.
  • Keep testers out of direct sun and away from heat.
  • Replace a tester when it looks, smells or feels different from a fresh unit.

6. Place trial sizes where decisions happen

Put the single sheet masks by the register, where they work as an add-on. Keep the 10 mL Drop next to the 50 mL on the main shelf, so the step up in size is visible. A client who returns for the full size will reach for the one she has already seen.

Both products and their case packs are listed in the catalog. For the full Drop story, see the EGF Blue Drop webbook.
