Fall barrier season: what changes in October
As the air turns dry and the heat comes on, clients ask for richer, calmer routines. The stock mix and a five-step shelf reset for October.

October is when routines change. Outdoor air gets drier and indoor heating comes on. Expect more questions about skin that feels tight or looks flushed, and more requests for something richer at night. The shelf that worked in August usually needs a reset.
The October stock mix
Plan around three roles. Each answers a different client question.
1. The calming cream
Midnight Blue Calming Cream is a lightweight gel-type calming moisturizer for skin that wants comfort without the feel of a heavy balm. Its blue comes from guaiazulene, and the formula includes Centella Asiatica, Roman chamomile flower extract, Ceramide NP and sodium hyaluronate. It is the last step of skincare, applied in thin layers. Sizes: 60 g $31.00 MSRP, 30 g $25.00 MSRP and 20 g $12.00 MSRP. The brand reports 2M units distributed (brand-reported).
2. The barrier cream
Rich Moist Barrier Capsule Cream is made for dry, sensitive-feeling skin that wants rich barrier support without a sticky finish. It is built around ceramide capsule technology, 3X Rice and 3X Ceramide care. The tiny capsules melt into the cream as it is rolled onto skin. 80 g, $26.00 MSRP. Staff note: this is a separate product from the Rich Moist Soothing Cream, so keep the names straight on shelf tags.
3. The daytime reset
The Blue EGF Calming Mist is a bi-phase cooling face and body mist with EGF 5 ppm, FGF 5 ppm and guaiazulene 300 ppm, plus madecassoside and ectoin. It works morning, midday or night, including over makeup. Shake well and use 3 to 4 pumps. $28.00 MSRP. In fall it answers the midday moment when indoor heat leaves skin feeling dry.
All three have no fragrance or essential oils listed, so "no added fragrance" is accurate for each.
Before and after: the shelf
Summer shelf: light textures up front, refresh products at the register, richer creams on a lower shelf.
October shelf: calming and barrier creams at eye level, the mist at the front edge, light textures moved down but kept in stock.
Reset the shelf in five steps
- Move light summer textures down one shelf. Keep them stocked for clients with oilier skin.
- Place Midnight Blue Calming Cream 60 g and Rich Moist Barrier Capsule Cream side by side at eye level. One reads "calm," the other reads "rich," and clients can compare.
- Put the Midnight Blue 20 g at the register as a trial size at $12.00 MSRP.
- Set the mist tester at the front edge of the shelf so clients can try it on the back of the hand.
- Add a two-line sign: "Looks flushed? Midnight Blue. Feels dry? Rich Moist Barrier."
October timing checklist
- This week: order the two creams and the mist so stock lands before the heat is on everywhere.
- Mid-October: count units on both creams. If one clearly leads, give it an extra facing.
- Late October: reorder the leader ahead of holiday gifting traffic.
Shelf note: "Skin feeling tight or looking flushed this fall? Blue to calm, Rich Moist for comfort. Ask us which one fits."
The minimum is one full case of a product; products ship in sealed case packs from California, or your carrier can collect. See case packs in the catalog, and watch the Wednesday desk update for what is new on the desk.
